Careers: Writing/reprint rights

Question
I'm fairly new at publishing and perhaps you can help. A journal wants to publish one of my pictures and asks to "Please assign first reprint rights?"

What exactly are they asking for? I'd truly appreciate any information.

Answer
Jim, I'm not exactly sure what this one means, because I've never been approached to sell first reprint rights. I do know first rights gives the publisher the opportunity to be the first one to publish the piece. Because I'm not sure, I don't want to lead you in the wrong direction. However, I can recommend a site with an article that may help. If the article does not help, e-mail the owner of this Web site. She has answered a couple questions for me in the past regarding rights, and she's very friendly. The URL to the article is http://www.writing-world.com/rights/copyright.shtml The name of the lady I believe owns this site is Moira Allen. Hope this helps. Good luck and best wishes!

I have over 10 years of freelance writing experience, and in 1999 I successfully completed a one year course in Basic Novel Writing. I have sold over 100 articles to both print and electronic publications, published two books, and I am the editor of a new e-zine for writers (Coffee Break for Writers). In addition, I also write daily updates and news articles for Soaps.com.
