Careers: Writing/writers club or what is it I need to do?
Expert: Susan Rand - 6/11/2006
QuestionHello:
I have written a book (desktop created) and will need to go through the process of having an editor and an agent represent me. But first . . .I am NOT a "professional writer" and I know I may need someone to look at my work.
I have been struggling as to what the first sequence of events should be. Please advise
I have been trying to get involved with a writers group and can not locate one in my area. Can you help? I live in Jupiter, Florida.
Also . .. how does one protect the title rights to their book name and content before llowing a stranger to look at it?
Kind regards,
Yvonne
AnswerHello Yvonne:
Is this the first draft of your book? Does it represent the best work you are capable of at this time?
What I would suggest is that you join some writers' groups and put portions of it up to be critiqued. You can find them at groups.yahoo.com, geocities and MSN. Pay close attention to the suggestions you receive; consider them carefully. However, don't be in too much of a hurry to change things - the best critique is one that tells you what works and what doesn't, why it works or doesn't work, and how to fix it. Most often, that calls for a professional editor or MS doctor (like myself).
I am sorry to hear you can't find a writers' group near you. You could always start one! But online groups have several advantages, which you will discover once you join a few.
Once you have your book in "tangible" form (meaning it can be carried from place to place, which includes saved on the computer), your work is automatically copyrighted. It is very unlikely that anyone would try to steal your work unless it is very good indeed. Titles are not copyrighted seperate from the work. Anyone else is free to use your title for their own book if they want.
I hope this helps. If it does, a nice rating would be greatly appreciated. I am proud of my high score over 700 questions.
And good luck with your writing!
