Caribbean for Visitors/island vacation for family
Expert: Wendy Larsen - 1/13/2009
QuestionQUESTION: Hello-
We would like to plan a trip to somewhere on the Caribbean with our family of 6. We'd like to stay somewhere clean and comfortable (absolute luxury not a requirement) with many water activities on site and included. Babysitting/kids clubs are not necessary - we will likely keep the kids w/ us. All-inclusive would be fine but not necessary if there's a cheaper alternative. We'd likely fly out of RDU. Can you tell me (1) the cheapest time of year to do this (one possibility for us is 10/31 - 11/5/08) and (2) about how much do you think we could get away with spending? Budget is a key factor but not at the expense of a fun and convenient vacation. Your advice is greatly appreciated!
ANSWER: Hi Kathryn,
Sorry I didn't reply sooner. We had to do some prep work for a tropical system that was ( is currently ) heading our way.
Okay, here are a couple of suggestions.
You could go to Nassau, Bahamas & stay at the Comfort Suites, it is located next to Atlantis Paradise Island. All guests staying at CS have full privileges at Atlantis. They have a great pool/water park/beach area! CS also includes a continental breakfast. If you would be willing to fly out of CLT, you could catch a direct flight.
For you dates, I would guess that will run between $6-700 per person.
Another option is Jamaica. Sunset Jamaica Grand Resort & Spa offers a clean, family friendly, all-inclusive environment. There is plenty for everyone to do, all your meals & drinks are included as well as non-motorized water-sports. That will run about $7-800 per person.
Prices may be somewhat lower in early to mid-December if you would be willing to travel then.
The prices I mentioned are only an estimate, so they could be somewhat higher or lower.
I hope this has helped a bit!

QUESTION: Hello-
Thanks for your previous answer. Do you think that the Bahamas is the cheapest choice as far as visiting the Caribbean? (not a cruise)
Also, more importantly, what is the cheapest time of year to travel? We have options during spring break, summer, and Christmas break.
thank you!
AnswerHi Kathryn,
In answer to your question, no, I do not feel the Bahamas are the lowest priced option. Also, if you want more of a "Caribbean" experience, I would go to Jamaica. The Bahamas are really quite "Americanized" .. though I still go every chance I get. Jamaica is also a very good value when compared to most other Caribbean destinations. Dominican Republic is also very beautiful there can sometimes be good deals offered there.
As far as getting the best deal you would need to travel during non-peak holiday times. When the kids are out of school, the prices are typically much higher. Spring & Christmas breaks are the highest times. Summer break is still high but there are more deals available, especially in the very beginning of the summer, such as the 1st week of June. The lowest prices are found mid September to mid November, then after Thanksgiving to a few days before Christmas & after the 1st week In January to about early February.
Hope this helps!
