Caribbean for Visitors/destination wedding

Question
QUESTION: Hi Wendy
My fiancee and I recently decided on having a destination wedding in the Caribbean.  My sister just had one in Jamaica, and we absolutely loved it, but don't want to also have one in Jamaica.  I have researched different islands, but they all sound great to me!  I'm having a hard time choosing one.  I want a beach wedding with family and friends, nothing too fancy or expensive, and hopefully an all-inclusive.  Could you direct me in the right direction?  Thanks!!

ANSWER: Hi Jennifer,

Congratulations! Destination weddings really are wonderful, much less stress than traditional weddings. So, when is the big day? Keep in mind the rainy season throughout the Caribbean...

The most affordable yet decent resorts for weddings will be found in the Cancun area, Jamaica ( you already know that ) Dominican Republic ( my fave ).

Cancun offers from large complexes to smaller resorts. There are more adult only resorts here than in the DR.

The Bavaro Beach area in the Dominican Republic is very popular for weddings. Beautiful beaches, large resort complexes with something for everyone.

Some of the resorts that are popular are RIU, Barcelo & Palace. They are located in both countries ( as well as other countries )

I would be happy to help you plan your wedding if needed. I am a destination wedding specialist after all :)

Hope this helps some!

QUESTION: Hi Wendy
Thanks so much!  That was very helpful.  I do have some additional questions.  I guess I am just wondering about the saftey of Mexico and the DR.  We are hearing some things on the news about Mexico's drug wars, so I'm just wondering if it is still safe to travel too.  And I just don't know much about the DR.  I know it is right next to Haiti, and I have heard mixed things about it from people I know, including sanitation issues.  However, I am looking for an affordable place everyone can travel to.  Thanks so much for your time!!

Answer
Hi Jennifer,

There are drug wars happening in Mexico & as of just yesterday, there is news that they have reached Cancun & it was the chief of police that was smuggling! For now, I would not recommend Mexico at all.

The DR is still safe although it is a 3rd world country, English is very limited & there is crime. That being said, I have sent numerous people to the DR, usually Punta Cana, Bavaro Beach area & nobody has had a single incident of any sort. I do hear of the occasional item missing from someone's room & I have also heard of young woman, that left themselves vulnerable, being attacked. That can & does happen anywhere. Just because we are on vacation doesn't mean something bad won't happen. As far as sanitation goes, if you are staying at a reputable resort, there should not be any problems at all. I cannot vouch for the off the beaten path properties, I only recommend well known brands, such as RIU - Palace -Barcelo - Club Med, etc.

Hope this helps!
