Expert: Wendy Larsen - 5/1/2006
QuestionMy husband and myself are both 60 and planning our first cruise to the Caribbean.
My questions as follows:-
1. Is Feb/March a good time to go?
2. There are lots of agents i.e. Cruisin.co.uk and Thomas Cook tv doing low prices. Is this okay?
3. Would yo recommend a dirct charter flight to Barbados/St Juan or London Hth. to Fort Lauderdale with a one night hotel stop?
4. Americam Imigration papers -why?
5. What Cruise line would you recommend for us?
6. What duration - 9, 10, 12 or 14 nights?
7. What is the best cabin position on the ship,I get a little claustophobic and feel that I would need an outside cabin perhaps with balcony?
AnswerHello Dee,
Congratulations on your upcoming cruise!
February & March are usually a busy time of year and the seas are usually somewhat rough due to wind. However, if you live in a cold climate it is great time to get away & enjoy the warm tropical breezes.
Whenever you get a price quote, be sure all taxes & fees are included. Often companies will advertise a price that is for the "cruise portion only"
I am not clear on your departure airport, You want to depart from LHR - SJU or BGI? If your cruise departs from FLL then I would certainly recommend flying in a day early.
Non-U.S. citizens must contact the appropriate consulates, U.S. Embassy and U.S. Immigration office to inquire about necessary travel documentation.
The cruiseline you choose depends on your needs, such as budget, activities, ports of call, etc.
Holland America is a wonderful cruiseline & would be my suggestion for you, however it is important to let your travel agent help you decide on the best fit for you.
The cruise duration again will depend on what ports you are interested in, etc. Since it is your 1st cruise, you may want to consider a shorter one than a longer cruise length.
It is best to be mid-ship & I strongly advise a balcony, especially for a lengthier cruise. It is so wonderful to be able to enjoy the ocean in privacy!
Have wonderful time!
