Carnival/caribbean cruise
Expert: Curtis Thorsen - 7/20/2008
QuestionI am considering taking a cruise - I have two choices. The first choice is on Carnival, Destiny on 27July08 from San Juan or the Carnival, Glory from Port Canaveral on 26July08. Any advice would be appreciated. Also I am concerned about the weather in the Caribbean at this time.
Thanks, Donna
AnswerHi Donna.... well you have picked 2 completely different itineraries...and must factor in air cost differences from Orlando or San Juan. With air prices on the rise that would be a major consideration. Also, you are looking at the Destiny being an older ship vs. the Glory being a newer ship......I have sailed both and must say that I did not like the Destiny.....she is starting to show her age for certain and will be converting to 5 night itineraries from the US in the near future. The itinerary of the Destiny is port intense and will mean little to no rest visiting all those ports of call as well as additional costs. I always tell our clients thatthe more ports of call visited will mean more out of pocket expenses i.e. shore tours, shopping, etc.... Personally I like at minimum 2 days at sea to relax and enjoy the ship and its ammenities and be pampered. The Glory is a luxurious ships and offers alternative dining (for a fee) that is incredible and not offered on the Destiny. As far as the overall experience on either ship, you will pretty much see no difference regarding food, service or entertainment. Don;t forget that you will have an additional $70.00 p/p for gratuities on either ship and if you have not already booked, be prepared for the fuel supplement fees of $63.00 per person added to your total cruise costs.
True you are in hurricane season right now, but the disturbances have been minimal so far this year and the peak season for activity will be in Mid August to Late Sept., so I would not let that be a real concern.
Also keep in mind that it is urged to arrive a day earlier than the actual cruise departure to allow for possible airline delays or cancelled flights.... no point in stressing out on your first day of the cruise where if you can afford it, come in a day early and get rested up for that dream cruise !
Best of luck in your decision.....and have a wonderful cruise !
