Question
I will be taking a cruise to Alaska within the next few weeks. Would you happen to know what the climate is like, How to pack without overpacking for every possible tempearture, and whether I can expect the same entertainment as on other ships (i.e. should I bring an evening gown for a formal dinner)? Any information you might provide would be helpful.

Answer
Leslie, for days pack jeans, you're best to layer to cover all eventualities.  Long sleeve blouses, some pullover sweaters.  The jacket I took was a polartec type that you get at Lands End.  Light weight, easy to pack, warm though.

Evenings, don't bother with an evening gown, you are in port all day and we didn't see people really dressed up.  Men in suits, but all the women...me included, wore pant suits and one night I wore a long black skirt and long sleeved sweater.  Took 2 pr of shorts, but never wore them.

On deck it can be quite chilly and windy.  Ports will be between 70-75, but can surprise you with a warmer day.  You'll be fine if you just layer and take comfortable jeans/slacks and comfortable shoes, you'll do a lot of walking.

Have a wonderful cruise, wish I was going with you.
