Hello,

My pinguicula florian is growing weird new leaves at the crown, why is this? It gets light from a south and a east window. It is in an African violet pot. The soil is one part peat, perlite, vermiculite, pumice, sand. Also, I took leaf pulling from a pinguicula esseriana and I can see the new plants growing at the ends. How long will it take for the baby plants to reach full growth?

Hi Joe,

Two issue might be affecting the plant. The first is low light. Ideally the leaves should be compact and brightly colored. The leaves on your plant are plant are greenish and elongated, signs that the plant wants more sunlight.

Another issue is winter dormancy. Mexican butterworts will go dormant in winter to prevent dehydration. When they do, they produce a rosette of smaller leaves.

It'll take a year or two for plantlets to reach full maturity from leaf cuttings. In volume 2 of the Grow Carnivorous Plant DVD series, we cover show you how to grow and propagate Mexican butterworts.
