Instead, we help growers by diagnosing a specific plant problem and offering solutions (i.e. Why is my sundew not producing dew?; Is now a good time to divide my Sarracenia?; Why are the traps turning black?; What's a good substitute for perlite?; Why didn't my seeds germinate?; Can you identify this carnivorous plant for me?)

Carnivorous Plants - nepenthes ampularia

Expert: Sarracenia Northwest - 11/1/2009

Question
can nepenthes ampularia adape to low huminity or should i use a teranium for this kind of plant? Thanks!

Answer
Hi Aaron,

This entirely depends on your region.  I don't recall where you live, so I can't comment about your climate.  Of course, if you live in southern Florida, Hawaii or Puerto Rico, a terrarium would be superfluous and not at all necessary.  If you live in colder climates, then it's advisable to grow the plant in a heated terrarium.

While you can grow the plant in lower humidity and slightly cooler conditions, you may not have an abundance of pitchers.  You will also see lots of leaf imperfections, such as rust spots.

Keep in mind that it's not just humidity, temperature also is a critical factor in growing lowland Nepenthes.  Nighttime temperatures should be above 65°F whenever possible.

Good growing!
