Carnivorous Plants/Nepenthes

Question
Hi.
I have a few nepenthes but I am not sure if I could be growing them in me region. I live in  L.A. in California.
It gets extremely hot in day and night in the summer with very low humidity.
But in the winter if can stay around 60-65 all day long with 50 degree night.
Which plant would be ideal to grow in this area?
I am on a limited budget.
Thanks!

Answer
Hi Jin,

Several Nepenthes can grow well in the Los Angeles area.  Many intermediate and highland plants will do well with those temperatures, but growth will be slow during the winter.  Plants may also not produce pitchers until the days get longer.  I'll give you a short list of plants to try:

Nepenthes x ventrata or deRoose's alata

Nepenthes x miranda

Nepenthes sanguinea, orange form.

Most Nepenthes maxima hybrids

Nepenthes truncata, highland forms

All of these are very easy growers, and will adapt to lower humidity.

I'm also giving you a link to a website that may prove useful.  The author is in the L.A. are.  He took his growing area photos down, but I know he grows most of his plant outdoors, and has lots of individual plant pictures.  http://www.nepenthesaroundthehouse.com/

Instead, we help growers by diagnosing a specific plant problem and offering solutions (i.e. Why is my sundew not producing dew?; Is now a good time to divide my Sarracenia?; Why are the traps turning black?; What's a good substitute for perlite?; Why didn't my seeds germinate?; Can you identify this carnivorous plant for me?)
