Question
Hi i was wondering what types of bugs you recommend feeding indoor carnivorous plants like sundews nepenthes and butterworts. I have no bugs in my house mabie a flys every couple months but thats it. Any information would be helpfull, thank you bye.

Answer
Bugs are actually one of the least important things about growing carnivorous plants.  Carnivorous plants are plants first and foremost. As with all plants, sunlight and water are the most important parts of their care. Insects are only a source of fertilizer, not a source of energy. Carnivorous plants are very good at capturing bugs on their own, but they need your help to get sunlight and water!

If you want to feed them bugs, use insects that are small enough to fit onto the leaves or in the pitchers.  If the insects are too large, they will likely rot on the leaves.

You can also use fertilizers, but you need to use them correctly so that you don't burn the roots of your plants.  For more information about the appropriate use of fertilizers, watch the Grow Carnivorous Plants DVD series.

PLEASE READ BEFORE SUBMITTING YOUR QUESTION:
We no longer answer how-to questions (i.e. How do I propagate...?; How do I grow...?).

Instead, we help growers by diagnosing a specific plant problem and offering solutions (i.e. Why is my sundew not producing dew?; Is now a good time to divide my Sarracenia?; Why are the traps turning black?; What's a good substitute for perlite?; Why didn't my seeds germinate?; Can you identify this carnivorous plant for me?)
