Question

European Wasp Eater
Hi guys,

I live in Victoria, Australia not far from Melbourne. I just
bought a carnivorous plant from my garden center. It was
sold as European Wasp Eater - so far I don't think it has
caught any wasps but is readily filling its tubes with house
flies.

Could you please advise what type of plant this is so I can
best care for it. At the moment it lives on my south facing
window sill and is constantly sat in about 2" of rain water.

I saw pictures from your site of them in the snow - could I
just plant this outside?

Thanks for your help!!

Jamie

Answer
European Wasp Killer?!  It should be called an American Wasp Killer.  Your plant is a Sarracenia hybrid, and all Sarracenia are native to the United States and Canada.  Some Sarracenia are known for capturing lots of wasps and yellow jackets.  These plants produce a nectar that wasps find irresistible.  House flies are also fond of the nectar.

PLEASE READ BEFORE SUBMITTING YOUR QUESTION:
We no longer answer how-to questions (i.e. How do I propagate...?; How do I grow...?).

Instead, we help growers by diagnosing a specific plant problem and offering solutions (i.e. Why is my sundew not producing dew?; Is now a good time to divide my Sarracenia?; Why are the traps turning black?; What's a good substitute for perlite?; Why didn't my seeds germinate?; Can you identify this carnivorous plant for me?)
