Question

Nv
I am growing a nepenthes ventricosa! I been fighting bugs with it and I thought it was getting better, but the leaf and vines on the main plant is turning brown at the tips and vines are dieing. The new growth on the small part of the plant had an open leaf on it and is now wavy. It is in the south window. Water from the sink. and I bought the soil from you guys. I live in Sacramento California. I have an exotic Lady that seems to be doing great in the same conditions. What do you think might be wrong with it any ideas?

Answer
Hi Juanita,

Thanks for supplying that extra information.  If you got rid of the bug problem, these symptoms look like hard water damage.  Generally Nepenthes are not that sensitive to hard water, but over a long period of time it can catch up with them.  I checked your water department specs., and depending on whether you have ground water or surface water source at your house, Sacramento water is fairly hard.  Try using distilled water on the plant for awhile and see if it perks up some.  It may also be that the plant is putting the energy into the new shoot and the old one may die.  This seems to happen frequently on N. ventricosa.  Give it some time after switching to distilled water and see how it does.  Let us know if it works.

Good Growing!

We no longer answer how-to questions (i.e. How do I propagate...?; How do I grow...?).

Instead, we help growers by diagnosing a specific plant problem and offering solutions (i.e. Why is my sundew not producing dew?; Is now a good time to divide my Sarracenia?; Why are the traps turning black?; What's a good substitute for perlite?; Why didn't my seeds germinate?; Can you identify this carnivorous plant for me?)
