Question

moss
I live in ny, in saranac lake in the middle of the adirondacks to be exact. i know there are a few native carniverous plants both pithcer and sundews. I like to get live moss for my terrarium. The last batch i got looks as if there may be some sundews coming out of dormancy from the cold winter. attached is an image. Am i safe to assume this is a sundew? there are several of them comeing up.

Answer
Hi Ryan,

You're correct, that is a sundew.  From the location and the appearance of the opening hibernacula, it is most likely Drosera rotundifolia.  They routinely are found growing in sphagnum moss

You may already be aware of this, but since the sundew is a cold-temperate plant, they should only be a short-term resident in your terrarium.  Since the terrarium environment is tropical, they will only handle a few months there.  It's also a less than ideal environment for the Venus flytrap I see poking in from the side. :)  http://cobraplant.com/index.php?main_page=page&id=8

We no longer answer how-to questions (i.e. How do I propagate...?; How do I grow...?).

Instead, we help growers by diagnosing a specific plant problem and offering solutions (i.e. Why is my sundew not producing dew?; Is now a good time to divide my Sarracenia?; Why are the traps turning black?; What's a good substitute for perlite?; Why didn't my seeds germinate?; Can you identify this carnivorous plant for me?)
