Carnivorous Plants/Drosera

Question
Hi Jacob.

Hope you are well.
You gave me some advice on Drosera falconeri some months ago.
They are doing very well.

I have them with all my lowland Nepenthes. We are going into winter here in South Africa. My falconeri's are still going strong. What now? Do I just reduce the watering till they start going dormant or will they go dormant by themselves and then should I reduce watering?

How long should I keep them dormant and how do they come out of dormancy, do I have to increase the amount of water for them to get them growing again or will they start growing first and then I increase the watering.

Thank you very much!
Adriaan.

Answer
Hi Adriaan,

Their dormancy is triggered by a change in daylight hours, temperature and soil moisture.  If you have them in an artificial environment, just continue doing what you're doing.  The dormancy isn't essential.  It only occurs when the conditions change.  It's their way of adapting to a dry winter.  So if you start seeing shorter leaves, then definitely decrease the watering.  Allow the soil to dry slightly before watering again.  Add only enough water to keep the soil damp rather than water logged.

Good growing!

We no longer answer how-to questions (i.e. How do I propagate...?; How do I grow...?).

Instead, we help growers by diagnosing a specific plant problem and offering solutions (i.e. Why is my sundew not producing dew?; Is now a good time to divide my Sarracenia?; Why are the traps turning black?; What's a good substitute for perlite?; Why didn't my seeds germinate?; Can you identify this carnivorous plant for me?)
