Question
Dear Sarracenia Northwest I am having trouble growing my sarracenia flava this season. When I first ordered the plant the pitchers where large about 2 feet tall. Last season I had the same poor growth growing the plant in an undrained pot which i was told to repot in a drained plastic container with a water tray. This season after taking the plant out of dormancy from the refrigerator and repotting in pure sphagnum moss not peat moss and placing it on a table in the back yard that gets full sun through most of the day the plant is still not reaching its original size. Can you please give me some advice on what is wrong. I water using distilled water not tap water and no fertilizer of any kind is finding its way into the pot.

Hi Omar,
Time. You need to give your plant a bit more time. Sometimes you won't see it reach full growth until June. It also depends on your local climate. Since you didn't indicate where you live, I can't really comment on the climate. In general, if your spring is relatively cool, the first set of pitchers will be shorter than in late spring and early summer. So give your plant time. If you need further assistance, write back and provide information about your location and where you got the plant from. Sometimes growers will grow their pitcher plants in greenhouses to get larger growth. This gives growers a false sense of what they can expect because when you grow plants outdoors, the leaves are often shorter. For this reason, we grow our Sarracenia strictly outdoors so that the plants will grow the same for our customers.
