Carnivorous Plants/Extra leaves on Droera adelae

Question

Drosera adelae with od
A few weeks ago I noticed two red bumps next to the main growth point on my Drosera adelae. I got excited thinking that they were flower stalks. It turns out that they were not because when they starting uncurling they revealed short leaves! So apparently my sundew now has three growth points? What is going on here and why? The central growth point has also seemed to stop producing leaves.

A little background: This particular sundew has been stressed due to a misunderstanding about there not being fertilizer in a particular brand of perlite, so I was going to cut it back to the soil anyway. It is growing under the standard indoor lighting with standard soil (all of my other tropical carnivores look great).

Answer
Hi Jennifer,

Thank-you for sending a photo.

Your plant just looks like it is producing a side shoot.  D. adelae is a very prolific grower, so this isn't unusual at all.  They produce growth and plantlets all over the place.  I've frequently seem them produce plants from their roots coming out of the bottom of pots, so a side shoot on a stem isn't out of character.

Good Growing!

Instead, we help growers by diagnosing a specific plant problem and offering solutions (i.e. Why is my sundew not producing dew?; Is now a good time to divide my Sarracenia?; Why are the traps turning black?; What's a good substitute for perlite?; Why didn't my seeds germinate?; Can you identify this carnivorous plant for me?)
