Carnivorous Plants/N. ventricosa

Question

N. ventricosa
Hello

About a month ago I ordered a N. ventricosa.  It was doing fine a new pitcher every week.  Then it started to turn a pasty yellow and pitcher production stopped.  Also the soil looks more black now.  I water it with distilled water once a day.  I was wondering maybe it's the Summer weather in Florida?  I plan on purchasing the new DVD on Nepenthes but not soon so I was hopping you could help me out on this one.
I attached a picture too.

Thanks Justin

Answer
Hi Justin,

A couple things could be a factor.  First, there's no need to water the soil daily.  Daily watering will cause the soil to breakdown faster, which is why the soil looks like it's turning black.  With the soil breaking down quicker, this will release more nutrients, which can cause the plant to stop producing pitchers.  Just water when the soil feels like its drying out.

I'm not sure on your lighting, but it could be that your lighting is too bright for this particular species.  When the leaves turn yellow, it's usually a sign that the lighting is too bright.  Shelter it from strong afternoon sunlight.

It may take a few months for the plant to recover, but it should recover nicely and start producing pitchers again.

Instead, we help growers by diagnosing a specific plant problem and offering solutions (i.e. Why is my sundew not producing dew?; Is now a good time to divide my Sarracenia?; Why are the traps turning black?; What's a good substitute for perlite?; Why didn't my seeds germinate?; Can you identify this carnivorous plant for me?)
