Question

Sarracenia pupurea
Hi Guys

I bought a S.purpurea from Sarracenia Nurseries in the UK over 20 years ago.  It has been divided many times.  I have now wondered which sub species it is. I does tend to keep last years leaves, it is hairy to the touch. Flowers a deep purple.  Please see attached image.  Adam Harrow (near London), England.

Answer
Hi Adam,

Beautiful plants!  I'm inclined to think this may be a hybrid.  At first glance it looks like Sarracenia purpurea ssp. venosa, but the pitchers are very green and more elongated than usual.  It's possible that it's just an odd clone, but it could also be S. purpurea ssp. venosa X(S. purpurea ssp. venosa x S. flava), sometimes called S. x melanorhoda.  Is the plant always light green like I see, or does it darken with more sun exposure?

Instead, we help growers by diagnosing a specific plant problem and offering solutions (i.e. Why is my sundew not producing dew?; Is now a good time to divide my Sarracenia?; Why are the traps turning black?; What's a good substitute for perlite?; Why didn't my seeds germinate?; Can you identify this carnivorous plant for me?)
