Question
HI,
I have a cephalotus follicularis that has been growing in a afircan violet pot for about 6 months it is producing only the non-carnivorous leaves. It has been growing with my highland nepenthes in my basement under bright 40'' tubes tempature is about 70-75 degreese during the day and about 55-60 degreese at night . Could you give me some tips on how to make it grow some pitchers?
Thanks

Answer
Hi Michael,

Under natural light conditions, Cephalotus produce the most non-carnivorous leaves during the winter when days are short and cloudy.  Your plant probably needs a longer day and/or stronger light intensity.  To get more pitchers make sure your lights are on about a 14 hour day, and within about 4 inches of the the lights. (I'm assuming your using standard 40 watt T-12 fluorescent lights.)  A good indicator of whether or not your plants could use more light is their color.  If they are all green, they need to be closer to the tubes.  If they have some red, you're probably fine.  Your other conditions sound perfect.

Good Growing!

Instead, we help growers by diagnosing a specific plant problem and offering solutions (i.e. Why is my sundew not producing dew?; Is now a good time to divide my Sarracenia?; Why are the traps turning black?; What's a good substitute for perlite?; Why didn't my seeds germinate?; Can you identify this carnivorous plant for me?)
