Question
Peat Moss?
Peat Moss?
QUESTION: OK, I found some moss that came with an orchid that we recently got and I was wondering if it was peat moss. To me it looks just like peat moss, but I have made a mistake before and I don't want to mess this up again.

ANSWER: Hi Kevin,

This isn't peat moss, it's long-fiber sphagnum moss.  Sphagnum is where peat moss comes from, however.  Peat is formed from the partial decomposition of sphagnum in bogs.

QUESTION: So if this isn't the right stuff, then my other question would be: can I use this long fiber moss to plant my purpurea in?

Answer
Hi Kevin,

Long-fiber sphagnum works just fine for Sarracenia.  Most folks don't use it only because it's more expensive and harder to find than peat moss.  Here's an example of peat moss:  http://www.lowes.com/pd_26986-1803-0082_4294822958_4294937087?productId=3029472

Instead, we help growers by diagnosing a specific plant problem and offering solutions (i.e. Why is my sundew not producing dew?; Is now a good time to divide my Sarracenia?; Why are the traps turning black?; What's a good substitute for perlite?; Why didn't my seeds germinate?; Can you identify this carnivorous plant for me?)
