Question

Nepenthes rajah
Hi there,
I recently bought N raja that is 12/15 cm in diameter. It came barerooted – I don’t know what substrate it was. There is no root system well-developed – only one long and some small ones. Is this a problem? I used only live sphagnum as a substrate. At the moment I grow it in my tank with daily temps around 29 C and humidity over 83%. At night I put it in my fridge where the temps are 9-10C. Is that alright? It is very hot in my country now and I don’t know how to cool the tank. However, I am more interested in the root system - will it form roots or it will die? I uploaded a picture. Thanks!
cheers, Dimitar

Answer
Hi Dimitar,

What your doing is probably fine for the summer, especially if you don't have air conditioning in your house.  When the weather begins to cool in autumn the refrigerator treatment shouldn't be necessary.  We have Nepenthes rajah in our greenhouse, and normal summer temperatures are in the 90's in the day and in the mid 50's F during the evening.  Their growth is very slow no matter what you do, but their best growth tends to be in the spring and fall.

Your plant does have roots.  It looks like it was a long cutting that was rooted.  More than anything else, just give it time.  Make sure it's getting plenty of light during the day.  Check out these proboards as a good resource for everything Nepenthes:  http://lhnn.proboards.com/index.cgi?

Good Growing!

Instead, we help growers by diagnosing a specific plant problem and offering solutions (i.e. Why is my sundew not producing dew?; Is now a good time to divide my Sarracenia?; Why are the traps turning black?; What's a good substitute for perlite?; Why didn't my seeds germinate?; Can you identify this carnivorous plant for me?)
