Question

N. Singalana
Allexperts,

Hey I have a question about why is my Singalana sending up new plantlets from
the base of the plant?  Also is my plant in danger of dying on me?  I got the
plant from you guys.   I am using Distilled water.  I have it growing under
fluorescent lights on a 14 hour timer.  I have enclosed a picture on to this email.
As always thank you for your help.

Sincerely,

Weylin

Answer
Hi Weylin,

Your plant is simply happy and growing.  Many Nepenthes send out these basal shoots from lower down on the stem.  It's just fine.

A secondary question that often gets asked about this is, "Can you divide it off into a second plant?"  The answer is no since it isn't a separate plant, just new growing shoot of of the stem.

Good Growing!

Instead, we help growers by diagnosing a specific plant problem and offering solutions (i.e. Why is my sundew not producing dew?; Is now a good time to divide my Sarracenia?; Why are the traps turning black?; What's a good substitute for perlite?; Why didn't my seeds germinate?; Can you identify this carnivorous plant for me?)
