Question

Drosera Spatulata
Hello

My Drosera Spatulata has died recently but not all the way I guess, the plants roots started to form another spatulata!  I was just wondering when I could cut the baby from the mother plant and when I could move it to a new pot.

Sorry for all the questions I've asked in one day!

Thanks Justin

Answer
Hi Justin,

Thank you for the photo.  Just for clarification, that plant is Drosera scorpiodes, a pygmy sundew from Australia.  All pygmy sundews reproduce via gemmae, vegetative bodies that pop off from the mother plant.  It's likely that the little guy was produced from gemmae prior to the mother plant dying.

In the right growing conditions, this species can live for several years.  We have many mother plants that are 3-4 years old.

You can move the little plant to a new pot, but you'll need to be very careful not to damage the roots.  For information on how to repot, grow and propagate pygmy sundews, watch Volume 2 of the Grow Carnivorous Plants DVD series.

PLEASE READ BEFORE SUBMITTING YOUR QUESTION:
We no longer answer how-to questions (i.e. How do I propagate...?; How do I grow...?).

Instead, we help growers by diagnosing a specific plant problem and offering solutions (i.e. Why is my sundew not producing dew?; Is now a good time to divide my Sarracenia?; Why are the traps turning black?; What's a good substitute for perlite?; Why didn't my seeds germinate?; Can you identify this carnivorous plant for me?)
