Carnivorous Plants/Flava

Question
Hey guys, I looked at the videos for winter care and either I missed it or what I don't know. I'd like to grow a Flava picture plant in Arizona zone 9. Since we don't see temps into the 60's till January my question is with this plant out side will it still go into dormancy and be in it for long enough? This past December it was in the mid 70's and even this week will be in the 70's with lows in the 40's. Thanks for any advice.

Answer
Hi Jason,

Sarracenia flava will do just fine in your area.  A couple years ago we had someone grow some plants for us in Tucson to see how they did, and they did fine.  Dormancy is triggered a combination of cool temperatures and short days.

The desert southwest does present some special challenges, and we have a chapter in our "Grow Carnivorous Plants" volume #1 on growing in desert climates.  http://www.cobraplant.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=38&products_id=...  Also, I highly recommend you purchase plants within the next month so they have a chance to adapt while your weather is still cool.  This way the come out of dormancy, and can grow and adapt as your temperatures warm.

Good Growing!

PLEASE READ BEFORE SUBMITTING YOUR QUESTION:
We no longer answer how-to questions (i.e. How do I propagate...?; How do I grow...?).

Instead, we help growers by diagnosing a specific plant problem and offering solutions (i.e. Why is my sundew not producing dew?; Is now a good time to divide my Sarracenia?; Why are the traps turning black?; What's a good substitute for perlite?; Why didn't my seeds germinate?; Can you identify this carnivorous plant for me?)
