Question

Developed pitcher
Hi Jeff! Remember the Nepenthes Ventrata I have that I asked about a few months ago? Well, it's been doing pretty well and had a developing pitcher about an inch tall. But I just realized that the closed lid and top parts were turning brownish and were a bit darker than the bottom half. Do you know what could be going on?

(From the image it doesn't look as brown as it really is)

Also, since it's the middle of winter should I cut off all the pitchers whose top half is all brown?

Answer
Hi Victor,

This is really common in the winter.  What has happened is that the pitcher has started to form, but because of short daylight hours it doesn't quite have the energy to finish the formation.  Just cut it off, but leave the leaf intact.  Do that with any of the pitchers that are already brown.  You'll probably see new pitcher formation starting after the equinox in March, especially if you start having some sunny days.  Here in the Northwest, we don't tend to see the sun again until May or June.

Good Growing!
