Question
I live in san juan, puerto rico and just re-potted my 2 nepenthes (a bicalcarata and a ventricosa) with my own mix of 1part perlite, 1part sphagnum moss and 1part orchid bark. as i was mixing it i noticed that the orchid bark also has some charcoal in it, not much but few. will this be detrimental to the nepenthes? i've watched your videos on nepenthes care but i don't remember any mention of charcoal.

Answer
Hi Andy,

Your mix sounds fine.  A little charcoal is of no harm.  It probably just isn't of any particular benefit.  That's why you don't hear Nepenthes growers using it much.  Otherwise, it sounds like a good mix.

Good Growing!

We no longer answer how-to questions (i.e. How do I propagate...?; How do I grow...?).

Instead, we help growers by diagnosing a specific plant problem and offering solutions (i.e. Why is my sundew not producing dew?; Is now a good time to divide my Sarracenia?; Why are the traps turning black?; What's a good substitute for perlite?; Why didn't my seeds germinate?; Can you identify this carnivorous plant for me?)
