Question
I live in Oklahoma and grow my plants outdoors in a peat perlite mixture using distilled water. I use the tray method and because of the hot dry Oklahoma summers I was wondering if growing plants in a small minibog fourteen inches long and eight inches deep and six inches wide might be more water efficient. Would it be? Do plants in minibogs need to be repotted and if so using what method?thank you for any help you can give
Hi Jonathan,
Yes, without a doubt. Plants almost always do better in larger planters since they have a larger water supply, better temperature stability, and space. We transplant our planters or "minibogs" about every three years. In a hotter climate every other year may be needed due to more rapid breakdown of the peat moss.
There's no particular method for transplanting these compared to other pots. I just like to lift the plants out with a hand-spade or shovel. I do make careful observation to make sure there are not seedlings or small sundews that have popped up as volunteers I might want to save. Same applies to sphagnum moss on the top of the planters that you may want to save.
