Question
Souring the time I've seeing that sarracenia glacé have like a umbrella so water does not go in because they produce theis own acids. Why do some nepenthes have that umbrella to. Do they produce acids or Is it ok that I put water in their pitchers

Answer
Hi Alberto,

Both Nepenthes and Sarracenia have lids to keep excessive rainwater from diluting the contents of their pitchers too much.  Rainwater still gets in some, but it minimizes it.  Each genus has a couple exceptions, however.  Sarracenia purpurea has no lid and catches rainwater intentionally.  Heliamphora, the Sun Pitchers, work the same way.  Nepenthes ampullaria is the most well know for doing this also, but a few others have either very small or no lids at all.

Except for the exceptions I mentioned, there is no need to put water in the pitchers.  Taller Sarracenia will actually siphon the water out over time.  Too much water in them makes them topple over, hence why they have a lid.

Good Growing!

Instead, we help growers by diagnosing a specific plant problem and offering solutions (i.e. Why is my sundew not producing dew?; Is now a good time to divide my Sarracenia?; Why are the traps turning black?; What's a good substitute for perlite?; Why didn't my seeds germinate?; Can you identify this carnivorous plant for me?)
