Carnivorous Plants/Nepenthes Help

Question

N. ventricosa x specta
The picture is a N. ventricosa x spectabilis (highland) which I bought from you at the fall open house last year.  As you can see from the picture, the leaves turned brown and partially died.  I am guessing that they got too cold in the window sill and/or got too hot in the midday sun.  I have some new growth from the plant which has some minor damage, but I was wondering if I should re-pot/change the soil at this time or not?  Should I wait till it has some more good growth before re-potting, or should I just re-pot it now to entice growth?

Answer
Hi Jeff,

This definitely looks like cold damage.  Sunburn looks a little different, and it's also very unlikely to have happened during the winter here in the Northwest.  I can barely get my Nepenthes in my windows in the house enough light at all this time of year.

Re-potting is a good idea.  As always, minimize root disturbance.  If you have some, a Superthrive solution could be helpful here also.  A weak orchid fertilizer will be beneficial also.  Try and relocate your plant to an area where the temperatures will stay steady in the 70's.  This plant is a highlander, but consistent temperatures will be helpful while it recovers.

Good Growing!

Instead, we help growers by diagnosing a specific plant problem and offering solutions (i.e. Why is my sundew not producing dew?; Is now a good time to divide my Sarracenia?; Why are the traps turning black?; What's a good substitute for perlite?; Why didn't my seeds germinate?; Can you identify this carnivorous plant for me?)
