Carnivorous Plants/Fly Trap

Question
Hey Guys, I was wondering about my Fly Trap. It is the one called a B52 for its large traps. I'm growing it in the Phoenix area and have followed your instructions for this climate in growing from your DVD. It is growing but slowly. It has a few traps two that are old and are now dieing off and one newer that's about the size of quarter and VERY red inside. The other leaves and traps that are growing are smaller. We are in the high 90's to mid 100's with lows in the high 60's to mid 70's. Is the smaller leaves due to the heat? I will have a 50% shade cloth over them soon. Thanks for the answer.
Jason

Answer
Smaller traps can be the result of lower humidity and stronger sunlight.  This is the plant's way of adapting to drier and brighter conditions.  Heat is rarely an issue unless the soil is overheating and killing the roots.  Use a meat thermometer to measure soil temperature.  If the soil is less than 90°F, the plant is fine.  As long as you have new growth coming up, you have nothing to worry about.

Good growing!

PLEASE READ BEFORE SUBMITTING YOUR QUESTION:
We no longer answer how-to questions (i.e. How do I propagate...?; How do I grow...?).

Instead, we help growers by diagnosing a specific plant problem and offering solutions (i.e. Why is my sundew not producing dew?; Is now a good time to divide my Sarracenia?; Why are the traps turning black?; What's a good substitute for perlite?; Why didn't my seeds germinate?; Can you identify this carnivorous plant for me?)
