Carnivorous Plants/Nepenthes Bill Bailey

Question

Nepenthes, Bill Bailey
I live in Oregon city, and my Nepenthes Bill Bailey has been growing great! The only thing that worries me is the change in leaf color recently. I previously (about a month ago) had this plant under a small T5 plant light and it seemed happy, but no pitchers. I recently upgraded to two 40 watt shop lights over a large terrarium (no south windows that have enough light). Since then I've noticed a large increase in pitcher growth, but the leaves seem to be getting darker. The top leaves look to be yellowing also. To much light? Maybe just the drastic change in conditions? Let me know what I'm doing wrong with this guy, he's my first Nepenthes and I'd hate to lose it. I'm also fertilizing the foliage once every two weeks with an orchid fertilizer (1/4 tsp per gal. of water). I purchased this plant from you guys in February this year, and its still in the same soil I received it in. Hope I covered everything, thank you!

Answer
Everything actually looks just fine.  The discoloration you see is from increased light exposure, and this is very normal for this variety of Nepenthes.  The new growth is green and firm; the plant has nicely colored pitchers.  Yes, the plant is quite healthy!  Nothing to worry about at all.  You're doing things perfectly.

Good growing!

We no longer answer how-to questions (i.e. How do I propagate...?; How do I grow...?).

Instead, we help growers by diagnosing a specific plant problem and offering solutions (i.e. Why is my sundew not producing dew?; Is now a good time to divide my Sarracenia?; Why are the traps turning black?; What's a good substitute for perlite?; Why didn't my seeds germinate?; Can you identify this carnivorous plant for me?)
