Question
Hello I live in south Texas, just by the Mexican boarder, my question was regarding the tropical pitchers growing conditions. here where i live it is very hot year round, summers are usually 100 degree temps; could I be able to grow the tropical pitchers or any tropical carnivorous plant here in south Texas??
Yes, you can grow a variety of Nepenthes in your region as long as you grow them in a sunny windowsill rather than outside. If you live near the Gulf, your options open up because the Gulf will help moderate the climate and make it more suitable for growing Nepenthes. If you live inland a bit, you will have to choose a bit more carefully because of the lower humidity.
Regardless of your location, the following species (and hybrids made with these species) would grow well for you in south Texas.
* N. sanguinea
* N. ventricosa
* N. albomarginata
* N. alata
* N. copelandii
* N. 'Miranda'
These plants are somewhat available in cultivation and are suitable for the first time grower. You'll have to check with individual nurseries for availability.
