Carnivorous Plants/poor growth of pitcher plants

Question
Sarracenia purpurea
Sarracenia purpurea
i have a small collection of pitcher plants (Sarracenia purpurea, et al) .  Some I have maintained for 20 years! Unfortunately due to a recent family tragedy, I neglected to upkeep my plants in cold storage this winter by not removing them to a sunny location early enough in the spring.  When I finally got around to caring for them, they had already begun new growth.  The growth is of nonfunctional pitchers which are long and skinny, do not open or form normal functional pitchers.

I placed my pots as usual in a very sunny sheltered outdoor location, as I have successfully for years.  They have still not shown any signs of healthy normal growth.  Any suggestions appreciated!!!

Answer
Hi Dave,

Purpurea's can be a little slow in getting started.  Just clip off any old pitchers with significant browning, and the badly formed pitchers.  After that just give it time.  It's still fairly early in the summer, so you should get some good growth still.  If you're not having any rain, be sure to keep a little water in the pitchers to help it catch insects.

Good Growing!

We no longer answer how-to questions (i.e. How do I propagate...?; How do I grow...?).

Instead, we help growers by diagnosing a specific plant problem and offering solutions (i.e. Why is my sundew not producing dew?; Is now a good time to divide my Sarracenia?; Why are the traps turning black?; What's a good substitute for perlite?; Why didn't my seeds germinate?; Can you identify this carnivorous plant for me?)
