Carnivorous Plants/Darlingtonia

Question
New Darlingtonia
New Darlingtonia
Hi guys!
Just purchased a nice looking little cobra plant, and while reviewing your care sheets (couldnt buy this kind of plant from you yet.. but I'm still going to use your caresheets!) I noticed the amount of sunlight I should let it get daily depends on if its a mountain variety or a coastal variety. That's my question; can you tell from picture what variety this cobra plant is? Do you think I should repot it based on not knowing how long its been since its been repotted, or IF it has been? The soils seems to drain fast, but the sphagnum moss looks like its seen better days (could be from shipping, I just received it today).
Thanks!

Answer
Hi Christina,

It's pretty hard to tell when they are young if it's of mountain or coastal origin.  Usually the ones I've seen that come from higher elevations have wider tongue projections, as where the coastal ones tend to point downward more.  This isn't the case all the time depending on the origin, however.  It just happens that many of the Darlingtonia in cultivation originated near Florence, Oregon from back in the 70's since some were common at that time on private land.  The plants from Florence often have the downward pointing fangs.

If you want to get it into a larger pot now, that's fine.  I would just disturb the roots as little as possible.

Good Growing!

Instead, we help growers by diagnosing a specific plant problem and offering solutions (i.e. Why is my sundew not producing dew?; Is now a good time to divide my Sarracenia?; Why are the traps turning black?; What's a good substitute for perlite?; Why didn't my seeds germinate?; Can you identify this carnivorous plant for me?)
