Carnivorous Plants/Dormancy

Question
Hello again, guys. I know I've been asking a lot of questions lately, but you guys are the most helpful by far of the growers who sell online. Anyway...

I live in Los Angeles a few miles from the coast. I have a Sarracenia minor that I purchased recently (and you identified it for me). I know that Sarracenia need a dormant period. According to the LA Almanac website, the average temperature in November is 73F and then it goes down from there until around April or so. However, I know that there can be unusual spikes of 80F in there. Will this type or weather be adequate for dormancy? Will the 80F days confuse the plant? Please advise!

Thank you!

Answer
Hi Megan,

You will have no problem.  Dormancy is triggered by both temperatures and photoperiod.  When the days start getting short the plants will go dormant.  Just cut off old leaves that brown.  Especially for S. minor, occasional warm winter days are not uncommon.  We also have friends that are growers in Hawaii and they grow Sarracenia successfully.  They have just enough of a decrease in daylight hours in winter to trigger dormancy.  They have a harder time with Venus flytraps, but I know from other customers that Flytraps do fine in L.A.

Good Growing!

Instead, we help growers by diagnosing a specific plant problem and offering solutions (i.e. Why is my sundew not producing dew?; Is now a good time to divide my Sarracenia?; Why are the traps turning black?; What's a good substitute for perlite?; Why didn't my seeds germinate?; Can you identify this carnivorous plant for me?)
