Carnivorous Plants/problem with cobra plant not growing

Question
Hello!

I planted 5 cobra plants this year in the spring. 2 of which are growing and looking quite healthy. The other 3 haven't died, but neither have they grown at all and just seem to be existing with no growth exactly as I received them. I have fed them as per your DVD instructions with foliar fertilizing, and this doesn't seem to help. Is it possible that they might grow after overwintering into next year?

Thanks in advance for your kind assistance!

Best regards,
J. Hovan

Answer
Hi Joseph,

The problem with Cobras this time of year is always their root systems collapsing.  The Eastern U.S. has been having very hot weather, and this is very likely the cause of your problems.  If you don't already, you should have about 30% shade cloth over them, and this isn't to shade the plants, they are fine with full sun, it's to disrupt full sun on the soil media to help keep it cooler.   Also you need to be putting cold water on them daily, especially at night.  You didn't mention how you have them growing, but if you have access to live sphagnum moss, and it must be living, using that as a media with Cobras does wonders.

If some make it through, you will have better established plants after a dormancy.

Good Growing!

Instead, we help growers by diagnosing a specific plant problem and offering solutions (i.e. Why is my sundew not producing dew?; Is now a good time to divide my Sarracenia?; Why are the traps turning black?; What's a good substitute for perlite?; Why didn't my seeds germinate?; Can you identify this carnivorous plant for me?)
