Carnivorous Plants/Terrarium

Question
Yesterday I got a 30 gallon fish tank. Im going to set it up in my basement on a couple shelves... The only problem is that I have to turn the fish tank on its side, so it will fit. Will my plants still be getting enough light even though the shop light fixture has to shine through the glass?

Also, Im putting heliamphora and nepenthes in the terrarium. I also have drosera regia 'big easy' and a couple cephalotus hummers giant and big boy. Should i put these plants in there too?

Answer
Hi Rob,

Your plants will get decent light, but the glass will effectively block all the UV from the fluorescent tubes.  That does affect plants some.  We find in our greenhouse that Nepenthes often won't pitcher until the sunlight gets strong enough in the spring, and we remove additional covering from the greenhouse.  If you can find a way to keep it upright so to minimize light loss, that is going to be better.

Your Cephalotus should do fine in the terrarium.  If you have tank on it's side, however, I would guess you don't have much vertical space.  D. regia gets quite tall; 18 inches isn't unusual.  The Heliamphora and Nepenthes are likely to outgrow it fast too.

Good Growing!

Instead, we help growers by diagnosing a specific plant problem and offering solutions (i.e. Why is my sundew not producing dew?; Is now a good time to divide my Sarracenia?; Why are the traps turning black?; What's a good substitute for perlite?; Why didn't my seeds germinate?; Can you identify this carnivorous plant for me?)
