Question
ok so i bought your ebook then i bought shoplights or at least fluorescent fixtures and bulbs the question is u say use 40 watt do u mean 40 watt t12 bulbs because thats all i can find in 40 watt. t5 and t8 go no higher then 32 watts

Answer
Hi Xavier,

I did some research on this to see what the difference was.  Shoplight type fixtures are designed to use either T-12 or T-8 tubes.   We've recommend T-12 (40 watt, cool-white) tubes because they have the highest initial lumen output(3100 I believe compared to the T-8's 2800).  However, after that it gets fuzzy.  T-12's are brightest at first, but begin to dim over time faster than T-8's.  T-8's last longer and maintain their lumen output longer than T-12's.  They are also more efficient to operate.

Bottom line, you can use either one.  You just might need to have T-8's a little closer to your plants.

T-5's are the brightest of all, but they require a different ballast.  Most regular shoplight fixtures can't use them.

Good Growing!

We no longer answer how-to questions (i.e. How do I propagate...?; How do I grow...?).

Instead, we help growers by diagnosing a specific plant problem and offering solutions (i.e. Why is my sundew not producing dew?; Is now a good time to divide my Sarracenia?; Why are the traps turning black?; What's a good substitute for perlite?; Why didn't my seeds germinate?; Can you identify this carnivorous plant for me?)
