Question
QUESTION: Can Brocchinia reducta be grown in a similar fashion as Heliamphora considering they come from the same habitat?

That is to say, they have similar requirements in terms of light, humidity, and temperature?

Thanks.

ANSWER: Hi Akira,

Yes.  The biggest difference is that Brocchinia is much less fussy than Heliamphora.  Also, treat them more like a bromeliad than a pitcher plant.  They like a well-drained media, and prefer not to sit in water.  Always keep water in the leaf well, and put some small amount of 1/4 strength orchid fertilizer in the leaf-well about once a month or so.  Give them as much sun as you can with overheating them.  Here in Oregon we put ours outdoors during the summer.

QUESTION: Thank you for the informative answer.  I have more questions for you as well.

By a well-drained media, would the fast draining soil mix sold by Sarracenia Northwest suffice for it?  Low nutrient, acidic soil?

Also, would Sarracenia Northwest consider selling these plants in the near future?

I noticed there isn't much information online regarding the actual care of this plant online.  The information I did find on a few sites seemed contradictory and I trust you guys more :).

Thanks.

Answer
Hi Akira,

Nepenthes mix is the best for Brocchinia.  The fast draining mix would be fine, but it dries out much faster.  The bark and the sphagnum moss in the Nepenthes mix. create a good quick drain, but good water retention.

It's possible by this summer we may have a few Brocchinia reducta for sale.  Several of our plants have "pups" and we will probably be separating in a few months.  Make sure you're on our mailing list if you want one since I know they will go fast.

Good Growing!
