QUESTION: Hi guys,

I just got my baby Cephalotus plants from eBay in the mail two days ago.

My question is can I separate them now or should I wait until they get used to things.

Also are the wilted pitchers just from shipping?

There was no sign of cold damage.

Some of the pitchers are wilted and some are fine.

Thanks, Jake

ANSWER: Hi Jake,

Shipping can definitely cause some wilting of pitchers from the rapid temperature and humidity changes.  Just give them time.  Clip away any of the dead ones.  Overall your plant looks really good.

I would wait a few weeks before dividing your plant.  Let it settle in an recover from any shock from shipping.  When you take it out of the soil look for distinct plantlets.  If a crown doesn't have it's own significant roots, don't separate it.  From the appearance you may have several plantlets forming.

QUESTION: Do Cephalotus make stolens ?

The reason I ask is because I popped the plant out of the pot to look at its roots and it looks like a stolen is growing from one of the plants !
It has pocked is head out of the ground.

If you look at the top right corner you can see it popping out of the soil.

Answer
Hi Jake,

They don't form stolons the way Darlingtonia does where they travel quite a distance from the parent plant.  Instead they have a rhizome that branches out from the main rhizome and comes out at the soil surface near the parent plant.  This seems to vary from clone to clone.  We have some plants that branch lots of little plants no matter what you do, then some rarely do it.  The giant forms are less prone to it. (Figures!)
