Question
I have bad news. during the winter i put my fly trap in the fidge for winter. but the fridge got way to cold and froze it. it was froze for mabey ony a day or two. i know they can tolerate light frost but mine was froze. the leaves are still green though. will it die? i still have it in the fridge but made sure it wasnt to cold any more. is there somthing i can do to prevent it from dieiyng.

Answer
Hi Robert,

The devil is in the details on this one.  If your flytrap was allowed to go dormant outside before you put it in the fridge, it's fine.  When a refrigerator gets below freezing it is usually only a few degrees below freezing.  That is well within the range of what they would experience in nature.  If however, your plant was actively growing, then it was just put in the fridge to induce dormancy, that may have killed it.  It would be like getting a freak freeze in the middle of the summer.

If the rhizome/bulb is still nice and white, you're fine.  If it is browning or getting mushy, say some final words...  It's possible just the leaves may have gotten frostbitten, so you'd be fine to just leave it in the refrigerator for another month before bringing it out to begin spring growth.

Instead, we help growers by diagnosing a specific plant problem and offering solutions (i.e. Why is my sundew not producing dew?; Is now a good time to divide my Sarracenia?; Why are the traps turning black?; What's a good substitute for perlite?; Why didn't my seeds germinate?; Can you identify this carnivorous plant for me?)
