Carnivorous Plants/Use of Fungicide

Question
Hi Jeff!

Winter time is more like winter now in Germany, finally, so I sprayed my plants one more time with fungicide, just to make sure.

I use "physan20" with which I have had good results so far.

However, and although it does not seem to disturb the plants at all or so, I was wondering if there is a risk of "over spraying" CPīs with fungicide? The manufacturer recommends not to spray plants more then every two weeks. When I do spray, currently once a month during the winter, I spray generously so that the fungicide flows down into CP crowns/rhizomes.

To your knowledge, can fungicide stunt plants in their further growth or so, or I donīt have to worry at all?

Thank you and have a good day!

Regards, JP

Answer
Hi JP,

The short answer is yes.  Physan20 is a quanternary ammonium compound super similar to what is used in many commercial non-bleach disinfectants.  In fact, you can use Physan as a disinfectant.  If you over use it, it can burn the roots or living tissue.  Sarracenia are pretty tough, however, so if you stick to manufacture's directions you should be fine.  Their spraying schedule is probably based on the speed at which the compound breaks down.

Good Growing!
