Question
pitcher plant
pitcher plant
Why no pitchers?  I mist it every morning,it  gets bright and partial sun in my green house.

Answer
Hi Helen,

Most likely two reasons.  You have a very healthy looking plant, but it needs more direct sun.  Move it lower and a little closer to the window.  What direction does that window face?  Your plant should get around 3-4 hours of direct sun.  Contrary to popular belief, Nepenthes are not really shade plants.  They don't like quite as much sun as Sarracenia, but not enough light is the single most common reason for plants not producing pitchers.

Also, stop misting.  Misting can have an inhibiting effect on pitcher production since it causes the humidity to see-saw.  Misting is an urban legend concerning houseplants, and makes us feel good, but is of little benefit to the plants.  Occassionally doing a heavy mist, more of a wash, is good to get dust off, but to actually raise humidity in a beneficial manner requires different measures.  Misting makes plants constantly try and adjust to humidity going up and down, and Nepenthes need things very stable with little change.

With more light, and more stable conditions, you should see tendril development in about two weeks, and a new pitcher or two in about a month.

Good Growing!
