Question Hi. I have two cats, and one of them was urinating frequently, with blood in his urine as well. A urinalysis on him showed a PH of 6 and urate crystals (due to uric acid?) in his urine. An ultrasound showed a urate stone (calcium oxalate stone) that now needs to be removed surgically.
After the surgery my vet says my cat needs to be put on “Hill’s Prescription Diet” L/D formula (although my vet says my cat does not show any signs of liver disease). As I’m sure you’re aware, this is very expensive, so my vet said that I should feed the cats separately. Problem is that my cats don’t eat like dogs where you put food down and they gobble it up right away, and I don’t have the space (or the heart) to keep them constantly separated in order to feed them. So my question is, is there a food I can feed both my cats (instead of the Hill’s L/D diet) at a more affordable price that will keep them both healthy (and keep the urate crystals/calcium oxalate stones from reoccurring in the affected cat)? Please help! Thank you!

********** Did you try another option besided the Hill's L/D for your cats? **********
Hello Adri - This is a common problem for cats... urinary infectons, crystals and stones...Sorry, you are dealing with this:
You can make your own cat food and feed it 2 x per day. You can cook it up for the week and freeze - Just take out daily, what you need. ** very easy to do! There are no commerical alternatives to the Hills unless you go with the Royal Canin Brand - very expensive too!
Here are some supplements that you will need for your kidney cat ...
Also, recipes are fine for both of them. The healthy cat will need the NuVET supplement to balance out the Home cooking.

Please tell your vet about any supplements you are giving your baby:

NEXT - let's get some Cranberry Plus into this kid:
This is from Revival Animal health - mixed into the dog food each day...
And Last / NuVET Feline Formual for CATS...
You may want to get this little one onto the NuVET Plus ...this is an immune system booster and healer...
I have had Excellent luck with my clients that take NuVET each day:
The cost is about .60 cents per day-
Or less ,if you only do 1/2 teaspoon per day:

Dr. Pitcairn's Feline Diet for Kidney Problems
1 1/3 cups (2/3 pound) ground chicken or turkey
4 cups cooked white rice
4 eggs
2 tablespoons cold-pressed safflower, soy or corn oil
( Please note: YOU do not need the following supplements if you use the NuVET cat vitamins)*****
1,500 milligrams calcium
1/8 teaspoon iodized salt
1/8 teaspoon potassium chloride (optional , for a saltier flavor)
1 teaspoon parsley, finely grated carrot or other vegetable (optional)
5,000 IU vitamin A
Taurine and other cat vitamins (about 5 days' worth--)--
(** NUVET for CATS is an option - see link )
50 milligram level B complex (or 10 milligrams per day)
2,500 milligrams vitamin C (½ teaspoon sodium ascorbate)
Mix everything together in a large bowl.
Serve raw if the cat will accept it. *Otherwise, mix all but the vitamins together, bake about 20 minutes in a moderate oven and then wait until it cools to mix in the vitamins.
Occasionally, substitute 1 to 3 teaspoons of liver for part of the meat.
**** AS FAR as the Vitamins : YOU don't need the supplements above , in the recipe - if you USE NuVET for cats: *************
NuVET is Excellent:
Another OPTION is to try So Jo for cats - YOU add the meat:
Also, SoJO makes a nice Organic Cat mix / YOU add the chicken or turkey to this SoJO mix : see here: Add x-tra water - Water is the Key to stopping URINARY problems in cats....
SoJo meats can be lightly cooked or given raw- see here:
Q: Can cats really eat raw meat?
A: Your cat’s digestive system is designed to handle raw meat. After all, wild or zoo animals don’t eat cooked meat. We’ve been using raw meat since 1985 with fantastic results. Purchase healthy selections of meat, always refrigerate or freeze, and follow recommended safe handling instructions on meat packaging. If you are still concerned, rinse meat in a solution of grapefruit seed extract or human-grade hydrogen peroxide mixed with water. If you prefer to cook the meat, add a general nutritional supplement or veggies to compensate for the nutrients lost to cooking. The important thing is to do what makes you feel comfortable.
Well - I have given you a BUNCH of info...
BEST wishes and I hope you decide to be your CATs Chef...
