Cat Food - food for cat with urinary tract blockage Hill's diet;

Expert: Marie Peppers / Cat Food / NuVet Feline Formula. - 7/1/2009

Question
Our cat, Sam, was just treated for a urinary tract blockage and had numerous crystals from a diet of Iams and Purina Friskies dry and wet cat food.  Sam is 5 years old and also throws in a few mice and rabbits in his diet...
Our vet wants him to eat expensive food only sold in his office and warns us that commercial cat food for urinary problems will only cause other problems.  My question is this:  we love Sam dearly but cannot afford the expensive cat food.  What can we feed Sam inexpensively that will not cause urinary problems.  we are desperate.  Please help me.  Thanks so much.  Mary Reese

Answer
Hi Mary - here are a few HOME cooking options for cats with urinary crystals and stones:  YOU will need to buy the vitamins to go along with this food - MUCH lower cost that the Hill's RX diet from the Vet.

Home made food - freeze up weekly -
*** use freezer bags and take out what you need each day:

Here is what you can make:

We have had good luck with this :
KEEP your vet up-to-date on your Feeding choices...

Dr. Pitcairn's Feline Diet for Kidney Problems

1 1/3 cups (2/3 pound) ground chicken, turkey or lean heart
4 cups cooked white rice
4 eggs
2 tablespoons cold-pressed safflower, soy or corn oil
1,500 milligrams calcium
1/8 teaspoon iodized salt
1/8 teaspoon potassium chloride (optional , for a saltier flavor)
1 teaspoon parsley, finely grated carrot or other vegetable (optional)
( AS for the Vitamins - YOU Don't need to add the following if you use the NuVET powder:)*****
5,000 IU vitamin A
Taurine and other cat vitamins (about 5 days' worth)
50 milligram level B complex (or 10 milligrams per day)
2,500 milligrams vitamin C (½ teaspoon sodium ascorbate)

Mix everything together in a large bowl.  Serve raw if the cat will accept it.  Otherwise, mix all but the vitamins together, bake about 20 minutes in a moderate oven and then wait until it cools to mix in the vitamins.  Occasionally, substitute 1 to 3 teaspoons of liver for part of the meat.

If your cat is very small give 1/4 of a teaspoon per day of NuVET powder-  If your cat is at least 8-14 lbs you can use 1/2 a teaspoon per day of the NuVET - MIX into the food:
Don't follow the directions on the NuVET Bottle - Follow my directions.
Thanks, Marie ( ASK the Pet Nurse)

When switching to a homemade diet, please consult with your vet about your kitty's particular needs.
