Question
Hello,
I have a 19 year old female cat, Buttons. We recently took her to the vet for a check-up (blood work, urine sample, vaccination). Her weight is down from 7lbs 3oz to 6lbs 70z. We received a phone call today saying that her kidneys may be in trouble (her urine was quite dilute and her water consumption has increased greatly), other than this, her health is good for her age. The vet suggested that we give her FeMalt, 3 times a week, and give her FOOD THAT IS MADE FOR SENIORS WITH LESS THAN 26% PROTEIN. The problem is Buttons is an incredibly fussy eater. For the past five years, she has been pretty much only been eating Grilled Chicken Fancy Feast put into a blender for 20 secs, to slightly puree it, with a few treats sprinkled on top. We have tried over 50 kinds of cat foods (non senior) (All fancy feast flavors, Tiki cat, Avoderm, Wellness, etc.) and she is hooked on the FF Grilled Chicken.
My poor kitty is getting so thin!
She still enjoys life and is a very happy cat.
I have had her since I was 5 years old; she is a very important member of our family.
Please help!
Thank-you,
Stacy
AnswerHi Stacy, I love the photo of Buttons!!! So cute!
I wish she was not such a fussy kitty. Here are a few recipes ( link below).
Pass them by your Vet;
Remember, it is best that your cat gets 80 % of her food from Moist canned and not dry.
(80% wet and only 20% dry foods for a senior cat)
Cats need more moisture so they don't get kidney diseases. I see your were using a food processor anyway. ( good )
I don't have a recipe to provide at this time. Buttons needs may be complex.
This is one of my FAVORITE cat sites for home-cooking:
SEE if the Hawaii Pet chef can help:

Feline Feeding Formula:
Meat 98%
ground raw turkey
ground raw chicken
raw or cooked seafood (taurine does not cook out of seafood)
tuna in water (occasionally, not daily)
Grain 1%:
Oatmeal, oatbran, rice, barley (grind into flour in blender or food processor)
only feed grain occasionally
Vegetables 1%:
puréed, juiced, raw or steamed -- this should ideally be a salad.
only feed salad occasionally
Bone meal: Mix 1/4 teaspoon into raw meat every few days
Allow cats to eat as much as they want for a month until they have detoxified and you will get an idea of how much to feed them. When eating a strict diet of commercial food, cats do not feel satiated but, when they eat real food, they will tell you how much they need.
