Cat Food/Obese cat

Question
Hello,
I have 2 female spayed cats, one is 4 yrs old, the other 7. The younger one is obese, a friend said I was feeding them too much. I cut their portions and now they share each day 1 5.5 can and 1 cup of dry food. The "normal" cat is the one that finishes her bowl and goes after the other, no the other way around. Am I feeding them still too much? I know that my vet could recommend diet food, but at this point I can not afford it. I buy food for them that I consider not the worse, but I admit not the top quality either. I try to play with them as much as I can, but I've been given them less food for about 6 months now and I see no difference. Could some breeds of cats be just big? They are regular shorthair american breed I adopted from the Animal Shelter.

Thank your for your time and consideration.

Answer
Hi Maria, Sounds like you are feeding the right amount for your cats.
How about you drop the canned food and make your own meat mix.
Cook up some white meat chicken or turkey.
Use about 1 to 1.5 cups of dry ( between the 2 cat).
Add 1/2 cup of cooked meat to share between them.

I wonder if the canned food just has too much salt?

If the weight continues it can be Thyroid issues.

BEST of luck to you!
