Cat Training and Behavior (Domestic and Feral)/Very Neurotic Cat

Question
I have around a 5 yr old black cat named Glenda who is the most antisocial cat ever.  She never plays with any toys although I have tried many different kinds, doesn't like people, doesn't like to be held or touched very much, hides all day and comes out at night (which I know is common since cats are nocturnal).  She has lived with my mom for 6 months but every time I go over there she runs away and hates me.  She lived with two dogs there and was fine with it.  She would come out and lay around them.  Shes moving back with me soon with my dog and I.  What can I do so she doesnt hate me so much and learns to love her new surroundings and new doggie friend?  I would like her to become more social, what can I do to help her do that?

Answer
Sarah,

If the cat is happy at your mom's then why take her away and put her though the trauma of living with you and a new dog?

It sounds like she was a feral kitten or had a feral parent. That kind of behavior is inbred in them and they probably won't change. If she is a feral then they usually only bond with one person. The distrust and dislike of humans is hereditary.

You can't force her to like you OR the dog. You should let her be and let her come to you for affection. Get a pet laser light. Hunter type cats usually love those and can't resist. They love to try to catch the 'little red bug' on floors, ceilings, and walls.

Also give her some raw beef rib bones periodically for a treat. Food is a great bribe. I get the butcher to cut them in half. It satisfies the 'fresh kill' urge plus the fibers in the meat cleans their teeth.

There are a lot of articles on socializing feral cats. Use Google and type SOCIALIZING ADULT FERAL CATS.

I hope this helps.

Dear Tabbi

Expertise

My expertise is in helping people understand their cat (or cats) and their behavior. Questions are welcome even if you don't have a cat....just a question about them. Hopefully my experience, suggestions, and comments will be of help to you...and your cat (or cats). Looking through my past responses to questions will give you additional information and/or answers too. Domestic Cats = cats (no matter what breed) who are tame or not wild, or abandoned cats who were pets that became wild, but can be tamed again. Ferals = cats who are born with one or more parents who were wild stray cats. They usually have had no interactions with people. They have an inbred distrust of humans and are difficult to socialize. They are skittish, hide, and are afraid of people. They take a lot of time and patience to work with them. A lot of kittens from shelters had a feral parent.

Experience

Since I was a child, over 45 years, I have been owned by a LOT of cats and kittens of almost every temperament, behavior, and personality. I have had experience with neurotic, disabled (including blind), stray, and 'problem child' cats and kittens. (A few normal cats too!) Plus all the things a lifetime of owning cats and research has taught me. I also have experience in feral cat behavior (which is different from domestic cats), and some experience with feral colonies that includes colony feeding and feral cat TNR (trap/neuter/release).
