Question
Could you help me understand the fundamental difference between evangelical, protestant Christians and Catholics?  Why do they insist that Catholics are not Christians?  Also, why does the Church want me to jump through hoops to have my marriage recognized?  Is it not enough that both my protestant wife and I love each other, love God, and have accepted Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Savior?  Thanks for your help!

Answer
Keith,
The fundamental commonality of Christians and Catholics is that we both have the same Bible (except for a few more books in the Catholic Bible), believe in the same Christ who died for our sins.  The fundamental differences are the seven Sacraments of the Catholic Church.

I do not know why some Protestants claim Catholics are not Christians.  They are misguided.  If you want to understand more why they may say this, buy any CD from Dr. Scott Hahn, a former Protestant minister who converted to Catholicism.  CDs by Dr. Scott Hahn can be obtained at www.lighthousecatholicmedia.com.

As far as "hoops to jump" for marriage in the Catholic Church, understand that forever is a long time -- so do it correctly.  Yes, pre-marriage testing or counseling will help you two cement what is NOT a contract, but a covenant.

I was Protestant when I was married 22 years ago, in the Catholic Church.  I converted 11 years ago, and it's the best thing I've done in my life.  Just hang on to your faith and you'll be fine. God bless your marriage.
